K-ETA for Russian citizens: what it costs, how long it takes and how long it lasts
Without K-ETA a Russian citizen is not allowed to board a flight to Korea. What it costs, how long it takes, how long it is valid and how to pay for it.

In short. A Russian citizen needs the K-ETA electronic travel authorisation to enter Korea, and without it you are not allowed on board. As of 8 August 2026 the fee is 10,000 won, processing takes up to 72 hours and the authorisation is valid for three years. Payment is accepted only by a card issued by a non-Russian bank. I found this out two days before my flight.
How I found out about K-ETA two days before the flight
Before my March trip to study in Seoul I read on a travel service that Russians do not need a visa, and relaxed. The page turned out to be old. Two days before the flight I went to double-check and came across an article: the rules had changed a few months before my departure.
I applied in a hurry. Passport, return tickets, hotel booking. It was approved within a day, although they promise up to 72 hours.
I could not pay myself: the payment did not go through with my virtual American card. Friends in Korea paid for the application.
I was asked for K-ETA three times: at passport control in Russia, in Tashkent and in Seoul. It was the first thing they asked about.

What follows from this
One rule, and it matters more than all the figures above. Check entry rules on the country's official website and for today's date. Any article goes out of date, including this one: I wrote the figures down together with the date I checked them precisely so that you can see how fresh they are.
If you are travelling to study in Seoul
Participants of the training in Seoul with Hong Jihoon pay for their own flights and accommodation, and apply for K-ETA themselves. Apply right after you buy the tickets, not two days before the flight, and decide in advance whose card will pay the fee.
More for the road: how I searched for tickets to Seoul, whether you need to collect your luggage on a Shanghai layover, how to pay in Korea without Visa and Mastercard.
